The cross is before us now with its wordless challenge to love beyond death
“St. Clare was one of the first followers of St. Francis , she was raised in a wealthy family, whose home overlooked the piazza of Assisi’s cathedral, she must have heard Francis preaching often. Moved by his radical message of Gospel poverty, she made up her mind to follow him and his companions. On the night of Palm Sunday in 1212 she left her home and walked through the darkened streets to the gate that led to her new life. It can be difficult for us to imagine what a drastic decision this was for Clare.”

Reflecting on the Symbolism of the Cross and Personal Challenges
The cross, a symbol that is fundamental to the Christian faith, represents not only the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ but also an invitation to accept the difficulties and sacrifices that come with living a life worth living. It is a heartbreaking reminder of the depth of love and commitment that goes beyond the realm of mortality.
In the contemplative spirit, it is helpful to think back on personal experiences that resonate with the meaning of bearing one’s cross. This metaphorical cross can manifest in various forms: the continued existence of hardship, the pursuit of a greater good despite personal cost, or the unremitting effort to uphold one’s beliefs and values in the face of adversity.
Such deliberation is not only an exercise in recalling past struggles; it is a chance to acknowledge the strength and growth that arise from these experiences. It is a chance to recognize the moments when, despite the weight of our burdens, we chose to endure, and follow a path that we believe aligns with a higher purpose.
This week, as we consider the events in our lives that have evaluated our resolve, let us ponder how these challenges have shaped our character and our understanding of love, sacrifice, and faith. Let us be glad about how these experiences have permitted us to connect more deeply with the teachings of Jesus, who embodied the ultimate act of love through his sacrifice.
In embracing our crosses, we find a common human experience, a common thread that unites us in our struggles and our triumphs. It is a journey that calls for compassion, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to move forward, guided by the transformative power of love.
Prayer
Most High, Glorious God,
bring light to the darkness of my heart,
give me right faith, certain hope, and perfect charity.
Lord, give me insight and wisdom
so I might always discern
your holy and true will.
Amen.
