August 22, we celebrate the Coronation and Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the fifth Glorious Mystery of the Holy Rosary.
There is a long Christian tradition of honouring Mary, the mother of Jesus, especially in the Catholic and Orthodox churches. The titles bestowed upon Mary exemplify her virtues and roles in salvation history. The title “Queen of Heaven” has its roots in ancient belief in the Assumption of Mary, the doctrine that Mary was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory. This belief was dogmatically defined by Pope Pius XII in 1950. The title emphasises Mary’s role as the mother of Jesus Christ, considered the King of Kings in Christian theology. Theologians like Saint Gregory Nazianzen have emphasised Mary’s special place in salvation history throughout history, and her titles are regarded as a testament to her faith and her part in the divine plan of salvation. These titles are not just honorary; they carry deep theological significance and are a source of comfort and inspiration for the faithful who seek Mary’s intercession in their prayers.
